Thornewood Castle

Wedding ceremonies are all about location, location, location. Depending on what you want of course. And if you're in the Pacific Northwest or have the funds for a destination wedding then the Thornewood Castle must be considered. At the wedding show in Tacoma our booth was down from a booth with very large elegant pictures. I thought the couple in the booth had a business selling portraits! That wasn't the case. It turns out the lavish looking castle in the pictures with the beautiful landscaping was And after learning the story behind the castle I had to get an interview from Miranda Suttle who coordinates weddings at the Thornewood Castle. You see this castle has some family ties. Below is the audio version with the words printed out from our interview.

Thornewood Castle, Bed and Breakfast, Inn and Gardens

This was your grandmothers? How did this get started?
Yes. Origionally it was a castle built in northern England. And the origional CFO of the Port of Tacoma went there with his wife and she saw it and wanted it. So they took the bricks and the wood, packed them up on ships and brought them over and reassembled it.

This is beautiful we'll get some pictures online. I was going to my booth and thought you guys were doing portraits, but this is an actual castle. Do you guys live there?
No. Close by but we don't live there.

So who maintains it?
The owners live on site and she has a staff as well and I'm included in that staff.

Now talk about what you do for the weddings there.
I'm the coordinator there so I'll go out and do wedding shows and meet with brides ahead of time to find out what they like and what they want. I do the contracts with them and then make sure it happens on the day of thier wedding.

Are they outdoor weddings or indoor weddings too?
It depends on the time of the year. And the nice thing about our place is that we plan for outdoor and indoor weddings no matter what because we live in Washington and it can rain at anytime so we have garden weddings and beautiful indoor 500 year old staircase that the brides can come down and get married in front of a fireplace as well.

What's a unique thing that happened at a wedding?
Oh there are so many. Every wedding is unique there. Most recently we had a wedding where they had twenty five kids coming so the bride hired childcare attendants, clowns, and caricaturists in carnival type setting and kept that seperate from hers. So it was really cool and the kids had a great time.
